Eaton County Court Docket Searches
Start an Eaton County court docket search with the Eaton County Public Case Search. That page routes you to separate Eaton County MiCOURT portals for three courts. They are Eaton County Circuit, Eaton County District, and Eaton County Probate. Pick the right court first. Then type a name. Eaton County traffic, parking, ordinary misdemeanors, small claims, and civil infractions usually sit in Eaton County D56A. Estates and guardianships are Eaton County Probate work. Major civil cases, family matters, and felonies after transfer belong in Eaton County C56, the county's circuit docket.
MiCOURT gives Eaton County users two tabs. One searches by name, the other by case number. The name tab needs a last name or a business name of at least two characters. Wildcards are not allowed. First name, middle name, and birth year are optional extras. For a case-number lookup, enter the year and number shown. Add a type if the form asks for one. Remember that Eaton County search results are informational only. A blank screen is not a verdict; check spelling, filters, and court choice before concluding anything about the docket.
- Open the Eaton County Public Case Search and select Eaton County Circuit, District, or Probate.
- Search the Eaton County party or business name, or enter the displayed Eaton County case-number fields.
- Use Eaton County status, category, filed-date, or offense-date filters only after an initial search needs narrowing.
- Open Eaton County case details to review the case header, events, next-hearing information, and disposition fields.
- Contact the Eaton County court record office for a public file, register of actions, or certified copy when the online result is not enough.
Note: MiCOURT hides nonpublic information and warns that some courts apply a seven-year criminal-sentence filter.
Eaton County MiCOURT Docket Paths
Eaton County's router splits its public court records into three paths. There is no one mixed list. Eaton County C56 covers the 56th Circuit Court. Eaton County D56A covers the 56A District Court. Eaton County P23 covers the Probate Court. The split matters. A traffic docket lives in D56A, while an estate file lives in P23. One caution: Probate balances shown in public search are not accurate. Ask Eaton County Probate to confirm any amount due.
The Eaton County MiCOURT Case Search lets you filter by status, such as open or pending, adjudicated or disposed, and closed. Public categories cover civil, criminal/traffic/civil infractions, and probate. Filed-date and offense-date ranges narrow things down when a common name floods the results. Open a case and the detail view may show a case ID, caption, filed date, status, next hearing, events, parties, charges or claims, and disposition. It will not expose every document or protected field as a public image.
| MiCOURT field | Use | Local caution |
|---|---|---|
| Last Name or Business | Required Eaton County name-search field | At least two characters; no wildcards. |
| Year / Number / Type | Eaton County case-number search controls | Number is required; use the form’s displayed format. |
| Case Status | Narrows Eaton County active or completed matters | Use after a first search rather than assuming a category is complete. |
| Filed or Offense Date | Limits a broad Eaton County result set | An empty date field does not prove a case is absent. |
For a route back to court services and notices, the official Eaton County government landing page collects links to county departments and court resources in one place.
The county's own navigation points the same way. When an Eaton County docket question becomes a records, payment, or departmental contact question, use the court-specific Eaton County route rather than a general one.
Court Dockets: What They Show
A court docket in Eaton County is a running account of a case. Some call it a register of actions when you request the chronological history from the clerk. The public view labels its pieces as case details, case events, case status, next hearing, and disposition. From those fields you can identify the court and case type. You can see the date filed, the parties, and counsel where available. You can also track actions like a filing, hearing, order, transfer, judgment, or closing event.
Fields vary from docket to docket. Criminal and traffic cases may list charges, bond, costs, restitution, or a balance. Civil cases lean toward pleadings, motions, hearings, and judgments. Treat any Probate balance in public search as unconfirmed until Probate itself verifies it. A case event can appear without a document link. And an event is not a certified copy of the underlying filing.
| Case ID / number | The Eaton County court-created identifier used to retrieve a record; use the displayed number rather than inventing punctuation. |
|---|---|
| Parties and counsel | The Eaton County caption, participant roles, and attorney information when the public view displays them. |
| Case events | Dated Eaton County register entries for filings, notices, hearings, orders, transfers, or a disposition. |
| Next hearing | When present, the Eaton County description, date, time, officer, location, and comments for a scheduled event. |
| Status and disposition | Whether the Eaton County case is open, pending, adjudicated, disposed, or closed, plus an outcome date when posted. |
| Documents | Eaton County links may appear, but public availability and certification remain subject to court rules and the clerk. |
Eaton County Docket Terms
Docket labels read better once you know what each one does. Eaton County publishes no single public codebook covering every court. So these terms come from official interface labels paired with plain meanings. No term appears in every case. Read any transfer or reset entry closely. It can redirect your next Eaton County docket search to a different court entirely.
- Register of Actions (ROA)
- A chronological summary of activity that the District Court Record Request form lists as a request option.
- Setting or hearing
- A scheduled court event with a date, time, type, and court officer or judge when shown.
- Continuance or reset
- A postponed or moved setting, not a final outcome; look for the new notice or hearing entry.
- Bindover or transfer
- Movement of a case to another court, commonly from District to Circuit after a felony preliminary stage.
- Disposition
- The recorded outcome, such as a plea or admission, verdict, dismissal, default, settlement, or other closing action.
The county's Courts landing page shows how the three principal trial courts sit together within one shared local court system.
Sharing a home page does not make the record offices interchangeable. The court named on the docket still controls the right search and copy path.
Eaton County Courts and Their Dockets
Eaton County splits its trial-court docket work across three courts. The Eaton County 56th Circuit Court sits at the top as the general-jurisdiction court. It takes major civil cases, felony matters once the District preliminary stage is done, family and juvenile matters, and authorized appeals. The Eaton County 56A District Court handles the everyday load: misdemeanors, preliminary felony examinations, traffic and parking, civil infractions, small claims, summary civil matters, and civil claims up to $25,000. Eaton County Probate runs its own record. It covers estates, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, mental commitments, and related matters.
The county posts no separate city municipal or justice-of-the-peace docket. A city police, code, or parking office can answer a citation or ordinance question. But any filed matter routes to the county court with jurisdiction. Federal cases sit outside this state court structure entirely.
| Court | Docket covers | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| 56th Circuit Court (C56) | Felony after bindover, major civil, family, juvenile, and appeals | County Public Case Search, then the Circuit Clerk for official records. |
| 56A District Court (D56A) | Misdemeanor, preliminary exam, traffic, parking, civil infraction, small claim, and lower civil | County Public Case Search, then the correct District department. |
| Probate Court (P23) | Estate, trust, guardianship, conservatorship, and mental-commitment matters | County Public Case Search, then the Probate Register. |
For confirmation straight from the county, the official 56th Circuit Court page lays out the court's role in the local trial structure.
Remember that Circuit is one branch of the Eaton County docket system. The case type, plus any transfer entry, tells you where to search next.
Eaton County Felony Docket Route
An Eaton County felony often means two docket searches. The Eaton County 56A District Court holds the preliminary examination. After a bindover, though, the felony adjudication moves to the Eaton County 56th Circuit Court. So when a docket entry says bindover, transfer, or appeal, search the other court. Do not assume the first record carries everything. The same logic applies when a District civil record shows an appeal to Circuit.
Money limits matter here too. District Court civil jurisdiction stops at $25,000. Small claims carry a $7,000 ceiling. Anything larger belongs in Circuit, and family matters follow the Circuit and Family Division path. That is why an Eaton County court docket search works best when it starts with the kind of case rather than a broad county label.
The 2023 D56A report counted 10,737 new filings across its listed categories. Traffic civil infractions made up 4,478 of them. Small claims accounted for 2,030. Those numbers track case categories, not unique people or incidents.
Court Dates and Settings in Eaton County
An Eaton County court docket may show a Next Hearing block. It lists the event description, date, time, officer or judge, location, and comments. Past events can include notices, continuances, orders, hearings, or an outcome. An outcome may explain a changed setting. The county Daily Court Calendar and MiCOURT CourtDisplay give useful views, but Eaton warns plainly that not every case appears on the daily list. A party's notice of hearing is still the final word on the date.
No date in the result? Check the case details first. Then scan events and any new hearing entry. Compare what you find against the Eaton County Daily Court Calendar before trusting either source. For a specific appearance, call Circuit Clerk at 517-543-4335, District Criminal at 517-543-4029, or District Civil at 517-543-4064 or 517-543-4097. District Traffic takes 517-543-3359. Probate is 517-543-4185. The county's Court Schedule covers the local calendar channels in more depth.
One caution: a continuance or reset is a scheduling event, not a disposition. Read the later event, notice, or next-hearing field before deciding a matter has ended.
Eaton County Calendar Gaps
Treat the daily calendar as a cross-check, not a replacement for the case record. CourtDisplay shows public columns such as party name, time, room, and case number. Its view can be empty or incomplete for a given date or court. A case detail can also lag behind a freshly issued notice. So for an Eaton County hearing, trust the notice first. Call the responsible court's phone line when a calendar row and the notice disagree.
The courts share a complex at 1045 Independence Boulevard in Charlotte. Court business offices keep a split public schedule. Hours run 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, under the 2025 court-hours order. The county does not publish current public terminal details. The historic Circuit e-filing pilot once provided one for electronic-file review. The Circuit copy page lists a conflicting hours line. So call ahead before a certified-copy visit.
For the Probate side, the official Eaton County Probate Court page gives its own court and staff path inside that complex.
Probate stands apart from the District and Circuit courts in Eaton County. It runs on its own docket track, so the register of probate is the office to call with any question about a probate court record.
Docket Access Under Michigan Law
Michigan court-record access is governed by court rules, statutes, and court orders. Public case records can be inspected or copied. But a file or portion made confidential by law, rule, or order stays closed even when you know the party name or case number. MiCOURT is an informational public index. It is not the final official record. Restricted categories may include juvenile and child-protective proceedings, adoption, mental illness, name changes, personal-protection matters, and wills. Court rules or the portal identify other restricted material.
Key rules:
MCR 8.119 requires the clerk to maintain court records and permits inspection or copying of public case records, subject to restrictions.
MCL 15.232(h)(iv) excludes the judiciary, including a county clerk acting as Circuit Court Clerk, from the FOIA definition of public body.
MCR 3.925 provides special confidentiality rules for juvenile records and proceedings.
For an Eaton County case file, go through the proper court clerk or record-request channel. County FOIA procedures cover county administrative records, not judicial records, so they cannot substitute for the court's own process.
Eaton County Docket Limits
A docket entry that never appears in MiCOURT can mean several things. Maybe the wrong court was picked. Maybe the filters were drawn too tight, or a name was spelled another way. Restricted categories hide some cases entirely. Some courts also apply a seven-year criminal-sentence filter. Older criminal matter may take a phone call to the court. That notice is a limit on display, not proof the record never existed.
Keep the line between an online case lookup and an official copy clear. A MiCOURT event list can point you to a register of actions entry or a document. It is no substitute for a clerk-certified copy. The 56th Circuit's old e-filing pilot shows the split well. A public terminal let people review electronic files, but certified or true copies stayed a clerk function. MiFILE, in the same way, handles filing and service. It is not a free public docket browser.
For a restricted file, ask the right clerk which rule or order controls access. A judge may weigh the request first. A public case header alone does not open the file. Note: Juvenile hearing visibility does not make the underlying juvenile record public.
How the Clerk Keeps Docket Records
Who holds an Eaton County court record depends on the court. Kimberly Morris serves as Eaton County Clerk/Register of Deeds and Circuit Court Clerk. She keeps the Circuit and Family Division files. At the 56A District Court, the clerk's office handles District criminal, civil, traffic, small-claims, civil-infraction, parking, and preliminary-examination records. Probate records sit with the Probate Register. Bring the case number, party name, and record type to the counter. The staff can then route the request correctly.
Fees differ by court. Circuit regular copies run $2 per page. Certified copies cost $10 for the first page plus $1 for each additional page. District record-request materials list the same copy and certification amounts, and SCAO forms are $1. A District request can cover a register of actions, case file, document, or transcript. The court says it contacts the requester before processing begins. The form posts no fixed turnaround, no universal search fee, and no ID requirement.

For a 56A file, register, document, or transcript, use the District Court Record Request. Route a Probate request to the Probate Register. A certified copy carries the clerk's certification. A portal screen capture is something else entirely.
Filing works through its own channels. District criminal and traffic filings go by mail, by fax to 517-543-1469, or in person; email is not accepted. The Circuit Clerk does take certain pleadings by email, though it bars email for new cases and for documents over 100 pages. Civil cases file through MiFILE, and self-represented filers may use the paper methods the court posts.
Eaton County Specialty Court Dockets
Eaton County runs several problem-solving programs inside its existing court structure. The lineup includes Adult Circuit Drug Court, J. Sauter Veterans Treatment Court, Felony Sobriety Court, the Swift and Sure Sanctions Probation Program, and 56-A District Hybrid Court. None of them is a separate public docket database. A program link may surface in the underlying C56 or D56A case. It might appear as judge or program context, a review hearing, a probation event, or a financial event. Sometimes the participant detail simply never shows publicly.
Adult Circuit Drug Court started in December 2007. The county describes it as serving qualifying nonviolent adult felony offenders with substance-use disorder. The statewide fiscal-year 2023 report put Eaton's 56th Circuit at 46 active participants in the applicable reporting table. That figure is a report-year count rather than a live roster. Juvenile programs call for extra care, since juvenile records carry their own access rules.
Confirm any specialty-court placement through the underlying case and court contact. Searching for a stand-alone program docket gets you nowhere. The county has not published one.
Eaton County Federal Docket Boundary
MiCOURT stops at the state line. Federal civil and criminal matters for this area belong to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan, which keeps a Lansing location, and federal appeals go to the Sixth Circuit. Track a federal case through CM/ECF and PACER, not through an Eaton County court docket search. Keeping that boundary straight matters. Otherwise a state-court search can masquerade as a full sweep of every court system.
The official Western District of Michigan Lansing location page identifies the federal location used for this regional court work.
The Lansing federal location stands apart from the county trial-court complex and its state docket offices. The official Western District CM/ECF court information describes the federal electronic case system and court information.
CM/ECF is the federal case-management layer; it does not replace C56, D56A, or P23 for Eaton County state cases. The official PACER pricing information explains federal public-access and document-fee rules.
PACER's rules are federal rules. They set no costs or access terms for records held by Eaton County clerks.
City-by-City Court Dockets in Eaton County
Eaton County counts five incorporated cities. The 2020 Census ranking used here lists Charlotte, Grand Ledge, Eaton Rapids, Potterville, and Olivet. None of them runs its own municipal court docket. No city case-number search, calendar, or certified-copy service exists at the city level either. City Hall can still explain where a local ordinance violation or citation came from. So can police, code, and parking offices. A filed city court case works differently. The docket usually lives with 56A District Court and its D56A MiCOURT record.
Each city page keeps local context apart from the court records the county actually holds. Population figures are 2020 Census incorporated-place counts, not current estimates and not township totals.
Charlotte Court Records
9,299 people in 2020; city code and police channels lead to D56A when a court case is filed.
Grand Ledge Court Records
7,784 people in 2020; local parking or ordinance contacts are separate from the county court register.
Eaton Rapids Court Records
5,203 people in 2020; city police context routes court-record questions to D56A.
Potterville Court Records
3,055 people in 2020; ordinance and police pages explain local rules, not case events.
Olivet Court Records
1,517 people in 2020; the city police contact layer remains distinct from the District Court docket.
Map and Directions to the Eaton County Courthouse
56th Circuit Court files, covering felony, major civil, and Family Division matters, are kept by the Circuit Court Clerk at 1045 Independence Boulevard, Suite 200, in Charlotte. The same courthouse complex houses the 56A District Court and Probate Court clerk's counters. A 2009 order established a public access terminal at the courthouse for reviewing electronically filed documents when a nonparty lacks the equipment to view them.

Court business hours changed under an administrative order effective March 17, 2025, and a separate Circuit record-copy page still lists an 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. line that conflicts with it, so call ahead to confirm before a copy-request trip. Published county sources do not detail complex parking or security-screening rules, so confirm those with the court in advance as well.
